Choosing a clearing and forwarding agent in Tanzania starts with understanding who will handle your cargo, documentation and delivery. Compare the scope of service and communication arrangements before comparing the final price.
Start with your shipment, not a generic quotation
An importer bringing shop stock into Dar es Salaam has different needs from a project buyer moving equipment onward to Zambia. Prepare a short shipment brief: origin, final destination, cargo description, package count, weight, dimensions and expected readiness date. Explain whether you need port collection, storage or delivery to a site. This gives each prospective agent the same information and makes the responses easier to compare.
Check responsibility at every handover
Ask who will prepare the clearance documentation, coordinate with the carrier and arrange inland transport. For a regional shipment, establish who communicates with the destination consignee and who handles destination formalities. A service area is not proof of an owned branch in that country. Ask how the actual shipment will be managed, and verify relevant current authorisations directly before appointing an agent.
Read the quotation line by line
Separate the agent’s professional fees from carrier, terminal, transport and other third-party charges. Ask which items are estimates and which are confirmed, how long the quotation is valid, and what circumstances could change the cost. If one quotation appears much cheaper, check whether it ends at the port while another includes delivery. Record all agreed exclusions in writing.
Agree a practical communication routine
Nominate one contact on each side. Request updates when documents are received, cargo arrives, an issue needs a decision, and delivery is completed. For businesses operating between Tanzania and neighbouring markets, useful updates identify the next action and its owner. An arrival message alone does not mean the shipment is cleared or ready for collection.
Questions to ask before appointment
Who is responsible for each stage? What information is still missing? Which charges are outside the quotation? Who approves additional spending? What evidence will confirm delivery? These questions help turn a general service promise into a working arrangement.
