Cargo packaging should protect goods through loading, transport, storage and unloading. For sea and road movements serving Tanzania and neighbouring markets, assess the whole journey rather than only the first pickup.
Describe the product and journey
Tell the packing provider what the goods are, how fragile they are and how they will be handled. Explain whether the shipment includes several transfers or a period in storage. The right packaging depends on the product and conditions; a general carton specification cannot cover every type of cargo.
Use the final packed measurements
Measure after the goods are packed. Include pallets, crates and protective materials in the dimensions and weight. Give these figures to the freight coordinator so the booking reflects the actual shipment. If packages cannot be stacked, make that clear before the transport arrangement is confirmed.
Make handling instructions clear
Mark packages with shipment references and appropriate handling information. Keep the package count consistent with the packing list. Do not rely solely on labels to protect a fragile load: the packaging and handling method must also be suitable.
Check packaging before dispatch
Look for torn cartons, unstable stacking, loose protection or exposed goods before pickup. Photograph the packed condition where useful. If the packaging is inadequate, resolve the issue with the supplier or packing specialist rather than hoping it will survive the journey unchanged.
Plan how packaging will be removed
The receiver should know which equipment or labour is needed to unload and unpack safely. Keep packaging where necessary for inspection or a reported issue. Agree disposal or reuse arrangements appropriate to the goods and receiving site.
